Looks quite a bit west of the NHC track at the moment.

Indeed, it skirted to the west as steering conditions collapsed. Almost did a loop. Sign of the northward movement starting, which we can now see clearly on radar.

Looks kind of stationary to me.

And Northern Cuba is paying the price for that. Hours upon hours of hurricane conditions.

Always a chance it could head due North and wobble East a bit. Nothing is ever certain.

What is up with all of this thunder? I keep thinking it's a tree falling on my house or debris. But it is actually thunder. I thought tropical systems were warm core?

Using radarscope, it appears the center has moved northwest about 3-4 miles in the last hour. Tough to say for certain, the struggle of the eyewalls continues. Inner is about 9 miles across, outer is about 15. Outer is getting stronger. I think we will see the outer "win" in the next 4-6 hours, if not sooner.

There was a ton of thunder and lightning in Harvey, at least at the second landfall. It was almost constant for hours.

These are the most dangerous types of storms. They lose their sex appeal and some of the younger ones (and unfortunately some who should know better) suddenly become expert hurricane forecasters and think the danger is over. Ike was a great example, with the huge windfield and massive surge when it finally lumbered onshore.

If you've come here to post about how this won't be so bad, or to argue with mets, or to criticize the NHC you will find posting privileges lost pretty quickly. This is not a platform to spread your sudden expertise or anger about a forecast not working out the way you wanted. Irma is a very dangerous storm and this is not the time to downplay it.

Agreed, I think she ends up making a serious run at cat 5 now.
