The 7 mile bridge is taking a beating. If damaged, the lower Keys will only be accessable by boat and those storm chasers will be stuck.

Once everything clears, my wife and I have decided to sail back to Key West.

Latest NHC track takes #Irma directly along Pinellas County. Wind forecast shows 102 mph sustained in Clearwater tonight (elevation: 72').

50 mph (80 km/h) with a gust to 70 mph (113 km/h). A private
weather station in Key West, Florida, recently reported a sustained
wind of 51 mph (82 km/h) with a gust to 70 mph ( 113 km/h).

They are following the official NHC track & forecast, but they did mention a little while ago that it has been moving more NNW during the past couple of hours or so.

Not a good time for that to happen. Plus we really need good data while it is over the open water between the Keys and Naples.
