Here is the weather.us Euro estimated wind gusts which had a landfall further west. I don't see any surprises. :)

I made a GIF from an older run as it moved up the coast. A lot of high wind gusts out there.

Well, in South Miami, Irma is making Matthew look like an afternoon thunderstorm. The wind is much, much stronger than anything we ever saw from Matthew in South Miami.

Need to take a break for about an hour...

Praying for all in Naples, Ft. Myers, and other Storm Surge threatened areas in SW FL! May everyone find safety!

Here in Homestead, we are getting FAR more than we did with Matthew! Strong winds outside, steady rain (though not torrential).

I just received an AP news alert on my phone that power outages are up to more than a million in Florida.

Thank God! I hope what you are saying is true, and I know say that because I recently learned of the historic and catastrophic storm surge Tampa can receive if the storm is West of Tampa. All we can hope is that wherever it landfalls in Southern Florida, that the intensity decreases quickly

Well, I can check my security cameras just fine so it looks like my home is still with power.

We'll see.

you could still get gusts over 100 mph. Enough to cause major damage to downtown Tampa

Most likely highest gusts near eye not sampled, or we don't know about them yet. In addition, this storm is huge with a very large wind field. Very reminiscent of Ike which was 'just' a cat 2.

I agree, I am sure there were higher wind gusts near landfall, but with so little reporting stations near landfall and the ones that were stopped reporting.

We've officially reached the Storm2K nowcast portion of tracking Irma as the main discussion thread has finally overtaken the models thread in number of posts.

BTW, both the GFS and Euro were spot on with these wind gusts along the coast of Miami Dade and Broward County.

Just a little breezy in North Brevard county! If you didn't know there was a hurricane, you would just think it was a typical Florida rainy day

Look at how flat the flight level winds (and to a lesser extent, surface winds) are way out to offshore Miami. Very little drop off (after the eye wall) over a huge distance.

Any word from Jim Edds, Mike Theiss, Reed Timmer? Theiss & Timmer are in Key West, Edds was on Big Pine Key.
