Re: Texas Winter 2019-2020
December 23rd 1989 DFW reached a low of -1F
One of the most severe arctic outbreaks occurred 30 years ago today! Sub-zero temperatures were seen across the region - one of only a few occurrences in North/Central Texas history. Glen Rose set the all-time record low for North Texas when they reached a bone-chilling -15F!

With the population growth in N. Texas. would a similar event today be catastrophic? I wonder if any insurance types have looked at this scenario?

We were 73 pages into our Winter thread this time last year. Of course most of it was due to the models teasing us on several occasions.

Yes, I remember it well. We had snow here in south Louisiana and I have many pictures of that day. Took me 45 minutes to get home from work where I am normally 5 minutes away.

There was certainly more hype and excitement around last winter but we all know how it turned out. I think this place will pick up as we move into January. I was hopeful we would see a pattern flip with the new year but things look delayed. However, my thinking hasn't really changed as the IOD continues to loose influence over the global pattern we will see enhanced convection return to the WPAC moving the Pacific into a more favorable pattern. That should be enough to shake things up and get us back in the game.

As a sidenote, that same arctic outbreak brought to us our first ever and only White Christmas ever recoreded here in history across the Jax and Northeast Florida area. I remember it like yesterday.
Boy have times changed. Now we rarely ever get to see or experience those type of cold outbreaks, like we saw in December 1983, January 1985., and December 1989. These are very anomalous events I know when they do occur but I would have thought over these past 30 years we would have seen a few more of these cold outbreaks.
We are lucky just to have a couple of freezes here in North Florida each winter over nearly the past decade now. Amazing. I don't want to get into a deeper discussion of why this is, but I will save that talk for another time.

Yeah I wonder if DFW will ever go below zero again
Even for single digits it goes back to 1996 which is crazy

I will say, looking at reanalysis temps in the 60's and 70's, temps were a little colder in the higher latitude regions, due to more ice, but i think those types of big big cold fronts are still possible today.

Yeah. I was in San Antonio at the time in high school. I think it got down to 4 degrees F there! Killed my dad's large Ligustrum hedge in back. Had been there planted for 13 years.

Re: Texas Winter 2019-2020
Weekend after Christmas looking stormy. Some high dew points with temps in the upper 60's could create some good rain for late December. We sure could use some big rain in DFW and other areas of Texas so this is one to watch I believe. Then a more normal pattern sets up around the New Years holiday including a cool day for the hockey game January 1. I did not see any rain forecast for that day so the game should go on as planned. I remember several years ago, maybe in Chicago, watching the hockey game while snow was coming down and the fans were all dressed for cold weather. We might see some fans wearing t-shirts in this one in 2020. Oh well, winter and outdoor NHL in DFW.

Welp, there is no hope for DFW if this happens before we get snow!

I still have vivid memories of frozen pipes and fire hydrants across SE Texas. While the 83 Arctic Outbreak lasted several hours longer, the 89 event caught many off guard right in the heart of Christmas.

I thought there was a day Dallas hit -4? Anyway, I can tell you a lot of people had to have transmissions repaired after that. I know 6 people who did including my mom. I guess the fluid was not up to par

Re: Texas Winter 2019-2020
This forum is starting to sound like Cowboys fans (and yes I am one) in that we always reminisce about the glory days and realize we will never win another Super Bowl. Hell, the only Super Bowl in recent memory for anyone around here was we hosted one and look what happened both team and weather wise..... just saying all we got to talk about is the glorious storms of the past. In fact just today I told my extended family in Jersey who are Eagles fans I was going to get out VHS tapes and watch reruns of the early 90s Cowboys.

The 83' arctic outbreak lasted 296 straight hours at or below 32F across NTX. Record!
Imagine if last years arctic outbreak that hammered the great lake states with sub 20 and 30 degree temps dropped this far south.

I think the only one happy on this board with this warm Christmas is that ole Ebenezer Scrooge... oh beg your pardon.. Wxman57.
This warm Christmas sucks for sure with yours truly!
Hang in there folks!! I know just from following this thread over the years, that y'all are aching for wintry weather and hopefully Mother Nature will stop this cruel game with us concerning some real winter weather coming real soon. The pendulum will swing the other way to us cold weather lovers way soon!!
In the meantime, I wanted to take this time to wish you all out in the Lone Star state and everyone else on the Storm2K forum a very Merry Christmas and the best this holiday season!!
Yeah even to you too '57
