Re: ATL: EIGHT - Tropical Depression - Discussion
Recon data so far has struggled to find anything at flight-level above 30kts, and that was still a far way away from the center. Definitely still a depression until it can get that inner core going.
Quite the sight to watch tonight though.

Re: ATL: EIGHT - Tropical Depression - Discussion
Yeah I definitely can't argue with the TD designation since recon is trying hard to find higher winds and don't seem to be successful yet, but I am absolutely floored they can't find 35kt yet with this jaw-dropping structure. I fear when winds start to go up they go up rather fast... or if this becomes a big sprawling system, could greatly slow the wind increase but let the pressure keep falling, who knows. Either way this is essentially a WPac monsoon trough depression in the Gulf of Mexico for some reason

Not a meteorologist, in fact more of an idiot than anything. You should probably check with the NHC or a local NWS office for official information.

trying ?
they have done one pass and are doing their normal Alpha pattern..
trying would be flying around the right front quad or doing circles in the heaviest convection..

Clear evidence of eyewall building.
Large area of increasing helicity being detected slightly to the west.

48 hours. Probably not long enough to get too serious. Probably.

Honestly though with Humberto and Harvey in memory I'm not turning my back on this to jump from TD to category one in 24 hours if structure keeps improving this quickly. This thing looks better than a lot of Gulf hurricanes already. And is probably in a better upper air environment than them too.
...ok, yeah, Texas and rapidly intensifying 'H' storms seem to have more than a little correlation recently

I've never heard of a tropical depression with an eyewall.

Wouldn't be surprised if I woke up In the morning and this was almost a hurricane, think the pressure will start to drop quick now

The conditions are good but not ideal for any kind of RI. Look carefully at the UL just to the SW that is funneling in some dry air. That should also be just enough to keep this at most a TS into Texas:

It's a pretty large storm. I wouldn't be surprised if the pressure/wind ratio is rather abnormal. It is strengthening, though.
