There is one that I have been watching as things went dark. I can still see a few lights that are probably on generators with howling wind and torrential rain.

Dropsonde suggests Laura may have attained Category 5 intensity.

Didn't quite make it to the surface, but those are some compelling winds. I would think that would support at least an intensity of 155 mph, no?

Any guesses on how strong the winds might get in Lake Charles? 120-130mph?

No instrument will record it, but I would suspect sustained 90-110 mph with gusts to 140 mph.

I'd think 115 (sustained) might be possible, but maybe not. I forget which met mentioned it tonight, but he wondered how the structure of Laura would hold up given the swampy, marshy land between Lake Charles and the Gulf.

That northwestern eyewall may get perilously close to Port Arthur. Don't know about Beaumont.

Important to point out dropsonde measures instantaneous winds, so it's possible these may have been gusts.

We'll see what recon gets on the final pass. If it's real close it probably justifies upgrade based on that dropsonde

Oh well, time for bed. Have to get up at 5am for work. Looks like Laura weakened a bit over the past couple of hours, but it'll be quite a devastating storm even at only 140-150 mph.
