With the temperatures we're playing with there's a legit chance that someone sees 2 feet of snow in the southern plains. If the GFS is a little bit more amped(which could very well happen knowing the GFS' bias, then it could be north Texas and Oklahoma getting crushed.

On the run it's snowing in the low single digits in the middle of the afternoon.

The only problem is that the warm nose keeps the DGZ a bit small so ratios are 12-1/14-1 during the snow event. If the system ejects a bit faster and a TROWAL forms then you won't see that extreme of a warm nose during the heaviest of snow and 15-1+ ratios would be possible.

Getting a little nervous. So the GFS shows a total accumulated snow of 16 inches for me in Lumberton as of Friday 19th. Surely that will not pan out.

quite frankly. if the GFS is right and I think it has a shot, in terms of extremes meteorologically. this is the winter equal to a cat 5 hurricane hit in the hurricane season for Texas and the deep south.[/url]

With the usual caveat that this is my opinion and people should base their decisions on official forecasts and information, I think Joe B might be right. If we get what some of these model runs are showing, it could be once in a lifetime stuff, a Cat 5 in the Gulf wintertime event that really happens. This isn't your garden variety event (at the moment, at least) where Brent finally gets his long awaited DFW snowstorm. With the threat of an icing event looming (maybe significant in places), we could see power supply problems mount across one of the most heavily populated corridors of our state. And that's before the severe arctic cold fully arrives and along with it, a potentially big snowstorm too. If we do get significant ice that causes problems, repairing any of the power grid would be difficult, maybe even impossible for a few days. And we could easily see government orders for schools and businesses to shut down to conserve power and get it to homes for heating (I remember that happening a few times in the 1980s). If it gets as cold as some model runs have suggested, and it has the staying power being suggested, we're in for a siege of winter weather that will not only break records, but could prove deadly due to power loss and all of the travel nightmares. While I understand local mets conservatively easing into their forecasts for something so extreme and possibly even historical, IMO we're quickly reaching critical mass of a possible multi-day event that will have a huge impact in our part of the world. IMO, they'll need to start sounding the alarm bells very soon so people can do whatever they need to do in order to be prepared. This is increasingly ominous and if it all verifies, I'd bet by the end of next week, this thread is nearing 500 pages or more.

This has potential to go 1899 and 1983 tier category at least for us. It may not beat the hours below freezing or -8 but you are hovering with that group.

I seriously think its possible, i dont know ALL the details when comparing the events, but what is huge in this case is the amount of snow cover over the entire state. Snow cover sill be huge. Down here to SE Tx, we will have out own bit of ice cover, but we wont have calm winds. Winds will be out of the north coming from areas with huge snow cover. I dont know how that will play in final calculations, but i think the reason we are seeing such deep dives in temp is due to snow cover.

12z GFS has 4 Storms in the Southern Plains within 200 hours. :shocked!:

(GIF still not coming in yet because Pivotal Weather loads things slower because all model times loaded in are ones that can do Soundings)

I have a Question here: Is it possible to have a PDS Winter Storm Warning/Ice Storm Warning?

I just checked the high temps next week in Darwin where the Heatmiser (in his head) migrated to. No temps in the 90's for him. However Singapore does touch 90 next week...

I think he's plotting summer's revenge for July and August. Truth be told I'll take it if if keeps the Gulf shut down which means we have more dry heat even down here on the coast. As long as we can get some spring rains in before then, have at it!

Kids are out of school today due to the overnight freezing drizzle. It’s super slick out there. Cops are pulling people
over and telling them to go home. Freezing drizzle has started up again. Temp has been steady at 23° for the last 24 hours.

GFS accumulated snow - this is going to get a lot of attention. Disclaimer: Remember, model errors are typically large 5 days out.

12z HREF shows the same gradient across DFW with the mean keeping the 0.75"+ totals SW of DFW. Several members do show a nasty ice storm for eastern portions of DFW tonight. FRAM accretion mean for DFW is about 0.25".

Summer's for hibernation, Winter’s my vacation

Don't use my posts as forecast, I'm a complete meteorology noob! I just like cold weather, alright?

All observations I post are for Temple, Texas unless otherwise stated.

I don't want a major ice storm tonight. But, I want enough to at least delay school because I don't want to drive on ice tomorrow at 8 a.m. because it was minor enough they didn't change school. I want bad enough but not too bad, if that makes sense.

The GFS shows a dry slot/lesser area of snowfall right up to my area. Lighter is a relative term...still six inches. So, hopefully, it doesn't trend north with that.

Well, try the Kuchera Ratio :double:

NOTE: Up to 9 days out, errors are higher when it's farther out, but this a Potentally Dangerous Situation!

That snow shield on the GFS is the biggest I have ever seen. All of KS down to most of Texas blanketed, and not with pity inch amounts. That's incredible. The state does not have the infrastructure to handle this, nor could surrounding states just send us their stuff, as they would need it, too. The Hutchinson, KS salt mine will be working overtime.

I'm still skeptical of the GFS. With those snowfall accumulations glaciers will start forming in Texas........MGC

Question... The "models" have, in the past, maybe now as well, been notorious for erring on the side of warm when an arctic front barrels down. So if all of these model posts verify, how much colder are we talking? A few degrees colder? 5-10 degrees colder? Asking for a SE Texas winter storm fan. :ggreen:

Probably very depend on which point in time you are talking about and your relation to the fronts. Yes it is traditionally a little too warm and has been short term for last couple days. Not sure on Bellville but for example I think the GFS is about right for once for Dallas tonight at 29, and on Tuesday morning its probably 5-10 degrees too COLD, at least. If it turns out to be correct I'll be completely shocked (but its been consistent.)

Monday is perfection for a Texas snow storm. Western Gulf surface low, 1040s Plains surface high, TPV over Midwest, negative tilting shortwave and a Siberian air mass at the surface.
