Are the radar returns that have been around Ft Worth ALL day actual snow showers or just false radar echos due to the proximity of the radar site?

Western Dallas county and Tarrant county (and others but I haven't checked ground obs) are all snowing and have been. DFW airport has been in the middle of it and has snowed now since 2-3AM consecutively. Visibility has dropped again out there so it's snowing at the ground.

@15F now ties the daily record low. Temps are falling west to east.

The radar beam is doing a good job of showing the low-level snow showers streaming in from the north, in the extremely cold air, like it is getting squeezed out just near the surface. As the radar beam travels away from the radar site, it shoots higher up into atmosphere (due to the curvature of the earth), above this shallow layer of snow, and you don't see the radar returns as you get further away.

The bands moving-in from the west are higher-up - that's why you don't see them streaming from N-S like the ones you see right over the metroplex. Fascinating stuff to see the different layers of the atmosphere depicted on radar.

Quite heavy light to moderate snow in north Tarrant ahead of the main line. Think this will make up for slightly lagged accumulations compared to some east around the airport. Definitely over an inch. Building quickly.

Figured this was probably coming - the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department has temporarily closed fishing along the Texas Gulf Coast. As noted here before, the December 1983 freeze (and to a lesser extent, the two freezes in 1989) nearly wiped out redfish along many portions of the Texas Gulf Coast. Others dating all the way back to the 1800s and beyond have done the same.

This freeze could be as bad and I’m afraid a severe fish kill could be coming down on the saltwater flats. Sure hope not.

Could also be a big shad kill at Lake Texoma and other Texas reservoirs where threadfin shad are the main forage base for largemouth bass, stripers, etc. This will be likely be very hard on numerous fish and wildlife species across Texas.

The fish kills thanks to the 1980’s events in our bays from Louisiana down to Brownsville were horrible. We’ve had a few since then related to bacteria levels and maybe a minor freeze, but this event will set the sports and commercial fishing back.

The upside is this event will cool the off shore waters off significantly where as they won’t so much of jump start for the upcoming hurricane season.
