Florida Strait systems under the right conditions can actually really get going, given the water temperatures there especially. Irma, 1935 Labor Day, and Donna are some examples of this; however, you are right in that the narrow space with the Bahamas on one end and Cuba/Hispanola on the other make it somewhat necessary that a storm's path is juuust right enough that it stays over the water and is able to intensify as a result. Does anybody take the ICON seriously? Not sure which is worse, the ICON or the NAVGEM

The blind squirrel finds the nut every once in a while. At the very least, the ICON has found that nut a few times (like when it was the first model to correctly show Dorian passing to the east of PR and surviving).
The NAVGEM is still searching.

I am only a meteorology enthusiast who knows a decent amount about tropical cyclones. Look to the professional mets, the NHC, or your local weather office for the best information.
