It actually backs up because the GOM tidal surge becomes so high, relative to the river height, the Mississippi river flow gets stonewalled where it meets the GOM. And conversely, the GOM tidal surge runs up into the river. It is really a phenomena to witness. It only happens in these rare intense Major hurricane events that come into SELA.

I'm trying to draw a mental picture of that?! One would think the net result would be for that section of the Mississippi to then completely over-wash it's banks as a result??
