Aren't these instantaneous winds/gusts and not sustained though?

People in Newfoundland really need to keep tabs on this in the future as well. This could be substantial when it gets there too

Yes, it could have gotten into a mesovort all the way down, which is why I'm not trusting that Dropsonde very well since the SW Eyewall Dropsonde in comparison has 50 knots at the surface.

Recon said the eye was 10 miles circular. That will probably collapse soon

I don't really see how this misses DR at this point. Hopefully it's not as destructive there as it appears to be in PR.

Praying for everyone involved. Truly a devastating storm.

I am no expert but my experience watching these systems through the years is a SW movement when it's rounding the ridge means it is reaching the edge of the ridge and will probably course correct soon. I definitely think it will make landfall in DR but I think it will probably only brush it. Let see what happens. It is always interesting to watch these situations when it goes off course.

Fiona is still heading west. Huge burst over western eyewall will help close off the eye once more.

I am by no means a professional. DO NOT look at my forecasts for official information or make decisions based on what I post.

Goal: to become a registered expert over tropical and subtropical cyclones.

Looks a lot like Grace after passing over Jamaica: a really tiny core connected to a massive band on the east side.

I am only a meteorology enthusiast who knows a decent amount about tropical cyclones. Look to the professional mets, the NHC, or your local weather office for the best information.

That core is small. It really contracted today. That core is going to get destroyed even over that portion of terrain in DR. It really needs to start turning soon.

The mid level is still West as of 00utc

There's some orographic mechanics at play too I think. Large, mountainous islands like these produce a low pressure of sorts, which can pull the track a bit to the left as they pass. Hortense in 1996 similarly made a significant west jog before turning northwest again, except this is moving slower so it's even more prolonged

Fiona is starting to get further south and west than even the 18z gfs, Hwrf and euro showed. For any of them to verify, Fiona needs to head more NW now, and it just seems to be going more west. Could be just a wobble. So we're in wobble watch mode it seems.

According to Wikipedia, Fiona is the 2nd wettest storm to hit the island of Guadalupe after Luis.

The blowup on the SW side is impressive, perhaps shear abating or some kind of mountain interaction.
