Tonight will really be the chance for Ian to rapidly intensify. I kept saying that Ian is starting to look better the last couple days but it never lived up to it. But maybe this will be the one... Anything less and it will be seen as an underachiever. One DMAX can change everything though. I remember back in 2017 when Harvey had a significant convective blowup in the Gulf of Mexico. It went from a rather disorganized storm to getting that "look" within hours.

No school closures for Monroe County (Florida Keys) despite being under a TS watch.

Ian may have the beginnings of an eyewall. Convection is popping up around a circular area at this moment. Its very interesting as to whether that is organized convection or not.

My bad, the '997 mb' was likely from a previous advisory.

Finally a pressure drop, recon found 999.6 mb and might still not be at the center (if it has one). Also, so far 41 kt FL winds and 38 kt SFMR.

I am thinking the NHC's Location: 16.2°N 80.3°W is off, the 40 kts FL winds are almost a full longitude & latitude away.

And recon has just passed 17°N per 2223z update.

Next data set will go through the center. I think we sre seeing more NW or even NNW than WNW motion, so it will be interesting to see what fixes we get on a center.
