The recorded wind speeds decreased as the recon aircraft moved closer to the center of the storm. It is nowhere near the eyewall yet. What gives?

They made a little detour and dropped a dropsonde

That’s perfectly normal. Passing through different outer bands.

We'll see more of the NE eyewall but I reckon Lee is a Cat 5 now. Or at the very least, 135 kts.

Yeah, I think daring Lee to beat Jova was probably not the best idea :lol:

Unless explicitly stated, all info in my posts is based on my own opinions and observations. Tropical storms and hurricanes can be extremely dangerous. Do not think you can beat Mother Nature. Refer to an accredited weather research agency or meteorologist if you need to make serious decisions regarding an approaching storm.

With that data, I would set the intensity at 135 kt. I'd want to see the flight-level winds a bit higher to go with a category 5 intensity. We'll see what the NHC says. I'd expect an update or special advisory soon.

I am only a meteorology enthusiast who knows a decent amount about tropical cyclones. Look to the professional mets, the NHC, or your local weather office for the best information.
