Given the southeastern heading of the storm though, that's not unheard of.

It gets really bad in these long lines of traffic. People get panicky and tempers flare. Gas runs out.

Best to evacuate early to beat the crowd. And while a riskier move have found waiting until 12 hours before landfall gives one a wide-open highway to escape because everyone has already left.

Every big hurricane in Florida you would see the stand-still traffic beginning just past Tallahassee all the way down.

Have seen the best and worst in people in these evacuation scenarios. You don't want to be one of the hundreds at a gas station waiting for a tanker truck that isn't going to be arriving.

Gas stations seem to be where people get the most worked-up with a Cat 5 coming.

Chuck

I was one who was stuck in the Rita evac before I found this site....24 hours to go 60 miles. I had an old truck and used a whole tank of gas. Besides the fact that it was all unnecessary, I will never wait until the last minute again.

Few days ago we were talking about whether this would be a strung out rain maker and now it's a Cat 5. Mother nature is truly something else.

Wow. 158kt FL and 176kt SFMR in the SW eyewall, extrap pressure down to at least 924.2mb.

Holy cow. That’s 9mb between passes.

150-155 kt and sub-915 in a few hours.

:double: WTF is happening

Officially upgraded to Category 5, first operationally assessed Gulf Category 5 since 2005? Michael and Ian were both post season upgrades

My posts are my own personal opinion, defer to the National Hurricane Center (NHC) and other NOAA products for decision making during hurricane season.

Sub-900 seems reasonable now, and a crazy intensity of 160-165 kt or higher could certainly happen.

The scary thought is if it can close off a CDG ring...that's T8.0 if it has a warm eye.

SFMR wasn't a thing back in the days of Camille, though...

Way before SFMR existed. The only other hurricane would maybe be Felix

With that pass, the AF plane looks to be done with this mission. Looks like we'll have another plane in Milton in a few hours.
