I don’t see how it takes a sharp north-easterly turn with those air currents.

That's because it's an analysis, and not a forecast.

Oscar is moving south of due west (260 degrees), still at about 10
kt. Due to strong mid-level ridging to the north and west, Oscar
is forecast to turn west-southwestward this morning, which will
bring the center to the coast of northeastern Cuba later this
afternoon. The ridge is expected to be replaced by a developing
mid- to upper-level trough over the western Atlantic in 24-48
hours, which should cause Oscar to turn westward and then northward
while inland over Cuba on Monday. Oscar is then forecast to
accelerate northeastward over the central Bahamas on Tuesday ahead
of the trough.

The steering pattern will look like this by then...

Plenty of strong SW flow will turn this system sharply NE. There should also be an increase in shear, which will induce weakening, as a new extratropical low develops to its N-NE. This new low will likely ingest whatever remnant vorticity Oscar has left.

The HAFS-A/B runs last night showing a Category 5 by morning were clearly reactionary, as they weren't resolving the system correctly in the first place.

It's an impressive little hurricane this morning, I'll give it that. Probably a top 5 Atlantic modeling failure, if I'm being honest here.

Looks like its a TS.
IMHO, I expect moderate strengthening around midday and running thru the rest of the daylight hours

Hurricane Oscar just came out of nowhere. I suspect it was a tropical storm earlier. It is easily one of the smallest tropical cyclones in the Atlantic.

It's late October and models are quite bearish so I leave the board for two days. And then the invest no one believed in is suddenly a hurricane. 2024 keeps baffling me.

Considering the small size of Oscar and the proxomity to the airfield the AF plane took off from I wonder what is the record for the most center fixes on a recon flight or if they will quit after 5. :?:

Eye am very interested to see this next pass!

They stopped doing center passes, I wonder if it is a Cuba thing where they have not had the time to authorization.

Very impressive Oscar, ICON didn’t give up on this system developing. I’m definitely now a fan of it.

Sadly no new passes because of Cuban airspace restricting US military aircraft from getting closer. Sucks because it looks like it’s back to quickly strengthening now and there are essentially no obs where it’s gonna come inland (in addition to the whole country being out of power too with the only obs up being Havana which is hundreds of miles away). IMO, it’s probably 80 kt rn based on the rotating dual VHTs and improved radar signature, and might squeeze a C2 peak (which would be 2024’s fifth lmao after Ernesto, Francine, Isaac and Leslie) before it comes ashore this evening.

Some cool SAR passes from last night and this morning that show just how defined Oscar's core has gotten. There may be some contamination in the wind speed measurements due to land proximity.

Looks to be trying to squeeze in one more strengthening phase before landfall, figures it would be right after recon leaves. Not good for Cuba.

Probably approaching the Cat 1/2 boundary right now. Thankfully it’s pretty tiny so impacts shouldn’t be too widespread, but just look at Beryl for an example at how even low-end hurricanes can pack a punch when they make landfall in the middle of RI.

I am only a meteorology enthusiast who knows a decent amount about tropical cyclones. Look to the professional mets, the NHC, or your local weather office for the best information.

Well, landfall is expected soon in Cuba and that island is part of the GE.

Oscar bubbling up with a lot of towers popping up around it's center and lightning, might be intensifying now its over water.
