What is it with this constant "bash the NWS" theme? They have been issuing SPS's for the upcoming storm. Perhaps it would be a good idea to verse yourself in the definitions of watches and warnings before posting such a titled thread. If there is no watch for you area then it is a good bet that the forecaster does not think you will experience those conditions. Whether or not he is wrong is really only known when the event is over.

Just going to add my $.02 worth. I think that criticism of the National Weather Service is warranted in some situations. Name calling and bashing isn't very mature, but if you have reasoning to back up your criticism of the NWS then it might be warranted.

I can't complain, my local NWS seems to have well-screwed on heads!
They almost always have a good and detailed discussion and even if in the beginning they can be a tad off, they have it fixed before all is said and done!! I can't criticize because without what I've learned on there and from some of y'all (
) I'm dumber than a mudfence when it comes to weather!! LOL
I would say if your local NWS is consistenly missing big features then maybe get a little upset, but unless you are every bit as knowledged as the person who wrote the forecast I wouldn't go blasting!!

There is a Reason The NWS peeps get paid the big bucks.. They know what there doing and are VERY good at it.. No questions about it.. Dont care who you are, or what your opinion of the NWS is, but to bash them is just rediculous. Most bashing is due to members getting upset because they are not calling for weather that they "want" in there area. Totaly rediculous and very imature

There is a difference between bashing and criticisms and disagreements, right? (I am just trying to figure what your definition of bashing is. If I have offended anyone with my posts I apologize.)

Maybe.....
They may still put out a winter weather advisory. The updated forecast at 9:45 am for NYC is going with 2-5 in. before changing to rain. They are forecasting similar amounts(4-6in) for my area(Boston) and have a winter storm watch. The usual expectations for Winter storm watch-warning is 6+ inches for a particular event, both NYC and Boston areas are very close to that criteria. Unfortanantly for snow lovers, rain will wash it all away!!

Re: the NWS
James,
Upton has issues a special weather statement for the NYC and LI areas. Right now, even after examing the 12Z model guidance, these areas do not appear likely to meet winter storm watch criteria.
It is possible that a winter weather advisory might be issued later given that 2"-4" (least on Long Island and most to the adjacent northern and western suburbs of NYC) of snow still looks reasonable before the changeover.

A generic "NWS Sucks" complaint because someone does not agree with their forecast is bashing...Are there legitimate things that the NWS seems to miss? Of course! Every met has a bad day, but this is a case of someone not liking a forecast, not blatant negligence on the part of the NWS. There is a good probability of a switch over from snow to rain in NYC proper...unlike the last storm...so it is ridiculous to say the "NWS sucks" because you do not like their forecast. The met who issued the forecast is not operating out of ignorance.

just a random thought knowing firsthand how the NWS likes to err on the side of caution... in all likelyhood, warnings/advisories will go out but ONLY after being reviewed VERY carefully. issuing a warning or advisory prematurely not only may incite unnecessary panic but should the warning or advisory not pan out, it affects the credibility of the NWS who simply want to maintain a good relationship and focus on public safety and awareness. the NYC region is a very densely populated area so unlike maybe rural W NY, certain provisions must be met as a check and balance with regard to the demographics. every official forecast has ramifications so they are in fact working in our best interest to ensure accuracy even if it means delayed warning/advisory. p
