Ignorant Quote from Brazil
"This system was totally different from anything we've ever seen here," said Laura Rodrigues, a meteorologist at the Santa Catarina state weather bureau. "It may be that it was neither a hurricane nor a subtropical cyclone, but rather something completely new."

I AM DUMBFOUNDED how they continue to try and rationalize the MISTAKES that were made with this OBVIOUS HURRICANE!!!
"We've never had a hurricnae before so it can't be one. it must be something completely new and unknow"?????????? There is something about that logic which escapes me!!!
TRAGICALLY, lives were lost, and not enough, if any, preparation was made for this DISASTER, mainly due to an APPARENTLY ARROGANT SCIENTIFIC COMMUNITY in Brazil. It appears pride got in the way of common sense to me since the rest of the world weather community was telling them they had a HURRICANE COMING!!!

To the Brazilian point...we do have hybrid cyclones all the time...especially during nino years...and especially at the end of old fronts. Remember Cristobal a couple of years ago...a classic example. These aren't new...but aren't tropical in origin.
Since there are really no tropical waves propogating along in the South Atlantic...without any data to the contrary...the evoloution of the Brazillian cyclone must have come from a source that we don't really regard as tropical. So that part I'm OK with pending further study.
However...at the time it went into Brazil, it:
1. Had an eye
2. Anticyclonic outflow
3. Strongest winds directly around the center of low pressure
4. Presumably a warm-core, not a cold-core upper low
By just about any scientific definition...that's a hurricane causing Cat 1-like damage. NO QUESTION ABOUT IT.
To say this is a "new" storm is preposterous and amounts to little more than a public CYA attempt. I wonder if the Brazilian people see through this.

Actually it had cyclonic outflow, and anticyclonic rotation. This being it was located in the Southern Hemisphere. Warm core wasn't a question, being the deepening convection as shown in the IR4 Loop. The eye is of question whether it was a extratropical due to it's size, or, if this storm had more time, could the eye have closed tighter and could strengthening have been possible.
Either way, Lives were lost, damage was substantial, and this was total complacency on the part of the Brazilian government because of the warnings from the NHC and the rest of the Tropical Forecasting Community!

I don't think definitions for cyclonic and anti-cyclonic reverse when you switch hemispheres...only the relative directions. Air rotates clockwise around/into cyclones in the southern hemisphere...but the flow remains cyclonic.
It moves away from high centers counter-clockwise...but remains anti-cyclonic (not-cyclonic).
In terms of the size of the eye...I think Isabel had a tire-truck 60NM wide eye at one point...bigger than this system...and there is little question that Isabel was tropical. None of the t-numbers from any agency were ST tagged.
I think there is zero question that this system was tropical/warm core.

People, they only know the informations to see that it was a hurricane, after the hurrica already cause damages.... After that, they think that it have a extra tropical " caracteristics " and a hurricane power.
Bye
