I was at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Sunday and I thought they did a pretty good job of keeping us informed. This year was my 19th trip to the 500 and I've never seen weather like we had Sunday.
Some people have underestimated the size of the Speedway. Some facts: it is a 2 1/2 mile race track, covers over 600 acres of land, has 300,000 plus people there on race day and is NOT a "stadium" by any definition. Simply put, the place is enormous. Speaking of stadiums, it could hold 9 (nine) Rose Bowl stadiums just in the infield alone!
Before the race was officially over, the jumbo screens were scrolling a message that read: "Severe weather is in the area" "The situation is being monitored". When the race was finally checkered flagged, I looked up and saw "Tornado Warning" on the message scroll, "Leave Immediately". We were seated in the Paddock Penthouse which is high up and requires a 5-story descent down an iron stairwell.
Thankfully the crowd moved quickly and efficiently as we had to get down, but also had to endure the stairs which are exposed. I didn't enjoy being on the stairwell with lightning popping, wind blowing and rain making everything slippery.
We took cover underneath some of the concrete arch structure of the main straightaway grandstands and were poised to jump into a concrete drainage ditch if things got worse. We watched the SW sky and listened to repeated sirens going off for over an hour. Finally got out after 7pm and made it back to Florida safely.
Way too much excitement for me for one afternnon: The Indianapolis 500 followed by being outside during a series of tornado outbreaks.
