Well said! :D

After 1998... tornado outbreaks for me aren't that fun anymore..

Even our typical summer severe thunderstorms make me nervous here

I agree...seems during a weekend as this they could temporarily suspend their Extreme Weather Stories/Storm Stories features!

I used to love the Weather Channel.. Now they aren't even that great...

I remember during the 90's.. if my area had a severe weather warning.. They'd not alone put an alert tone for us.. But they'd turn the entire screen red and give us the warning till the warning passed

Don't get me started on TWC. IMHO Adam Berg was awful today during the severe weather.

What is TWC???

I used to watch them a LOT too(before the internet), now I rarely do except in major outbreaks or weather events. I have the internet with much more timely stuff now. :) It doesn't surprise me that they aired Storm Stories, but it does disappoint. :( :x

I used to be a heavy weather channel watcher also back in the 90's. But now it's a waste of time because there's storm2k 8-) .

My Stormy Afternoon At The Indianapolis 500

#34 Postby EmeraldCoast1 » Thu Jun 03, 2004 3:23 pm

I was at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Sunday and I thought they did a pretty good job of keeping us informed. This year was my 19th trip to the 500 and I've never seen weather like we had Sunday.

Some people have underestimated the size of the Speedway. Some facts: it is a 2 1/2 mile race track, covers over 600 acres of land, has 300,000 plus people there on race day and is NOT a "stadium" by any definition. Simply put, the place is enormous. Speaking of stadiums, it could hold 9 (nine) Rose Bowl stadiums just in the infield alone!

Before the race was officially over, the jumbo screens were scrolling a message that read: "Severe weather is in the area" "The situation is being monitored". When the race was finally checkered flagged, I looked up and saw "Tornado Warning" on the message scroll, "Leave Immediately". We were seated in the Paddock Penthouse which is high up and requires a 5-story descent down an iron stairwell.

Thankfully the crowd moved quickly and efficiently as we had to get down, but also had to endure the stairs which are exposed. I didn't enjoy being on the stairwell with lightning popping, wind blowing and rain making everything slippery.

We took cover underneath some of the concrete arch structure of the main straightaway grandstands and were poised to jump into a concrete drainage ditch if things got worse. We watched the SW sky and listened to repeated sirens going off for over an hour. Finally got out after 7pm and made it back to Florida safely.

Way too much excitement for me for one afternnon: The Indianapolis 500 followed by being outside during a series of tornado outbreaks.

Thank you so much for the update EmeraldCoast! Welcome!

I've never been to there and I would've imagined that they would have some sort of an announcement, but it is great to get what actually happened from someone that was there. I'm glad that it did no result in something disasterous.

Here are a couple of pictures of one of the many message boards around the Speedway which displayed the chilling message to us fans as the race came to an end.

It's been a few months since this happened, but this was one of the most exciting/scariest events to happen in Indiana since the Super Outbreak some 30 years ago. The tornado missed Speedway by a few miles, but caused all sorts of F2 damage on the southside of Indy. This was one of about a million tornadoes that occurred in the state. My parents (near Louisville) saw 3 different tornadoes that day. One supercell after another popped up. Right at dusk there was a tornado about 5 miles south of where I live, but since it was dark I decided not to chase. It ended up being a strong F2/weak F3. The race kept being delayed by other storms, so I knew it was going to be a close call with that batch of supercells that hit the Indy area. It's good to know that everyone was well-informed of that tornado though.

Thanks for the pics, EmeraldCoast. Creepy to see that message up on the board.

Yeah PurdueWx, that was a wild day, May 30. We also had a tornado a few miles south of my location around 8:30pm. (F2) Definitely don't like the ones that hit at night.

Here's a link for a detailed track map of central IN for that day.

This one has tornado pics and a blowup track map for Indy.
