This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

Did NASA get the rocket up?

#1 Postby B-Bear » Wed Sep 01, 2004 11:13 am

I read on here somewhere yesterday that NASA had a rocket on the launch pad and only a narrow window of opportunity to get it up in the air yesterday or today. If they didn't get it up, there was not enough time to get it off the launch pad before Frances arrives. I went to NASA's web site but didn't see anything about a launch in the past 24 hrs. Anybody know anything about this?

Good. That's at least one multi-million dollar disaster averted. ;)

Rocket launched, but the Orbitors are in danger as they are housed at NASA in buildings that are rated for CAT 3 winds...

For KSC and other space launch info, Spaceflight Now http://www.spaceflightnow.com is good for timely news reports.

Kennedy Space Center braces for Hurricane Frances

http://www.spaceflightnow.com/hurricane/040901amupdate.html

"With Hurricane Frances threatening Florida's east coast, the Kennedy Space Center will shut down Thursday to give workers a chance to prepare for the approaching storm.

NASA's three space shuttles, valued at more than $2 billion each, are housed in their hangars at the spaceport, mounted well off the floor on jacks as usual during processing. As a precaution, the landing gear have been raised, the payload bay doors closed and all three spacecraft have been powered down."
