Two really good tips on hurricane supplies

#1 Postby ColinD » Thu Sep 02, 2004 5:27 am

1. Battery operated fan (no A/C)
2. A phone with a cord. (You might lose power but still have phone service)

Just curious, could cell phones still work afterwards?

The last major hurricane that hit me was Andrew, we had no power for 9 days but I don't remember about the phones and of course at that time, cell phones were only for the rich

Good question about the cell phone. In my experience with Charley, my cell phone was worthless for the first week afterward. Many things led to this: 1) damage to the towers, 2) No power to the towers, and 3) even when there was no damage, it was virtually impossible to place a call out due to call volumn.

I was able to use cell phone in Charley from Naples to Venice three days after the storm (Monday a.m.) with occasional drop-outs. Not sure it worked from landfall Fri to Sunday, though.

If you have a laptop computer splurge on a new battery and charge it up by using it for a few hours while you still have power. Sometimes you can connect by Internet when you are unable to do so by cell phone.

Don't forget to charge up your cell phone batteries as well.

Not that I have ever been affected by a hurricane, but just a thought on some things that may be useful- a car charger for your cell phone, as well as a power outlet converter for your car... My parents have an adapter that plugs into the cigarette lighter, and it gives you power in your car... If you car is with you and still working after the hurricane, at least you could have power somewhere...
