Derek:

Thanks for all the forecasts.

What's the Beta effect you mention in this write up?

what I mean is that this storm could be one we remember for tens if not hundreds of years, like 1900 galveston, 1935 Keys, 1928 Okeechobee, David, etc

Yikes! It looks like Ivan continues to intensify. This could definitely be one for the ages!

the beta effect is the effect that the coriolis force has on the system that naturally makes them move slightly to the north

I was thinking the same thing Derek. A weather enthusiast friend and I were comparing notes this afternoon, and we both noted how this hurricane reminded us of hurricane Allen in 1980...except Allen wasn't this intense until near Barbados.

I never like to forecast a cat-5 because they are so rare....but a hurricane in the Allen/ Gilbert class (or possibly even stronger) won't surprise me. This hurricane has all the earmarkings of an incredibly intense monster.

I know what you meant and meant no disrespect. Humor is my way of releasing tension.

How do you figure it will be the storm of the century?

If it hits Hispanola, wouldn't it weaken significantly?

Just look at Hurricane David, it hit Hispanola as a strong cat 4 and then degenerated into a tropical storm.

The storm of the century doesn't have to hit the USA. A cat 5 over Hispaniola could easily be the storm of the century.

nationalism os more appropriate for the political board (or when France later this evening starts issuing their strange watches and gives a hurricane warning after the hurrican conditions are already occurring (as they did with Hurricane Marilyn in 1995)

Besides, this likely wont even go over Hispaniola anyways, just bring cane winds and terrible flooding there

Thanks Derek. Hopefully it loses strength before hitting the islands...
