Very strong wording from NHC on Ivan...

#1 Postby Brent » Sun Sep 05, 2004 9:49 pm

Oh my ****.

IVAN IS FORECAST TO CONTINUE DEEPENING OVER THE NEXT 12-24 HOURS.
BOTH SHIPS AND GFDL GUIDANCE BRING IVAN UP TO 125 KT AT THE 24 HOUR
FORECAST PERIOD. THE SHIPS RAPID INTENSITY INDEX SUGGESTS THAT THE
CURRENT INTENSIFICATION PHASE WILL CONTINUE AS THE PROBABILITY FOR
RAPID INTENSIFICATION IS NEARLY NINE TIMES THE SAMPLE MEAN.
GIVEN
THE CURRENT INTENSIFICATION TREND AND THE EXTREMELY FAVORABLE
CONDITIONS ALONG THE FORECAST TRACK...IVAN IS FORECAST TO REACH 130
KT IN 12 HOURS. FLUCTUATIONS IN INTENSITY ARE LIKELY AFTER THAT
TIME.

Could Ivan turn out to be another Gilbert? Does anyone remember Gilbert in the Carribean years ago (in the 80's) that had sustained winds of 195mph and the lowest barometric pressure ever recorded? I can't remember the pressure but it was unbelievable.

Yep, the pressure was 888 mb. It's easy to remember because it was 888 in '88!

(1988) Gilbert's highest sustained winds were 175mph, gusts over 200.
I remember more about that one that I care to, I had to do a report on it in middle school.

um, for the misinformed...

Gilbert was max sustained winds 185 mph.

And the pressure although was officially 888 mb, it is believed that the recon obs were lower than that but was low to the point that it was discounted due to belief their readings were wrong. 883 mb.

It sealed it for many of us...I thought of John Hope as this system was hitting Florida earlier today--just briefly...

Qoute" that had sustained winds of 195mph and the lowest barometric pressure ever recorded?"

Not splitting Hairs sean but I think Typhoon TIP (Pacific)was lowest Pressure ever recorded...at 870 or 871?mb    Gilbert was however stronger than TIP in winds and indeed still holds the lowest pressure measured in altantic basin..... G'BERT in my opinion is the grand daddy of all atlantic based 'canes since!
