Mudslides and Dams Breaking
Besides the flooding that will occur with as little as 6 inches of rain, let alone 12-18inches...dams are weak up here in the mountains, especially the Lake Lure dam. The dam in montreat did break during Frances. Also many, many mudslides will occur and that can have a tremendous impact both in peoples wellbeing as well as transportation. Many roads still closed from Frances. It's a mess up here in asheville. Henry Margusty, an accuweather severe weather forcaster bsically said that rivers in asheville are at 100 year levels for September and he said, and I quote, "Flooding of BIBLICAL PROPORTIONS!"

Falls Lake is at 251.5 currently. Floyd flood level was 264.34.
Jordan is at 216.0. Flood of Record in 1945 was 242.1.
I don't live too far from the Falls Lake area (Wakefield Plantation).

Am also in Asheville and had plans to go to East NC for the weekend. Have moved my reservations up by one day and am planning on leaving Thursday if weather permits. Am concerned about getting back into town after Sunday. What would be the best route from the Greensboro area where I might avoid I-40 backups and mudslides??

Chemist 44, I have a house a few miles down river from the Lake Lure Dam!! Anything on the news up there about the dam? Last I heard all the flood gates were wide open.

You could always go down I-85 to past Gastonia and take 74 through Shelby to I-26. This adds about 40 miles to your drive.

Lake Lure Dam
I have no "official" information on the lake lure dam...but friends of mine in bat cave said officials up there are very concerned due to high levels on the Broad River..that there was some damage after Frances...at least they are letting the water out early...not like the bozos in asheville who pretty much wiped out biltmore villlage when they opened the gates right in the middle of frances........

I have seen a few recent posts about it. This reminds me of stories of
the Great Flood of 1906 in the Carolinas. Very same circumstances.
two tropical systems converging, one from the atlantic, other from the SW
at the same time. Greatest official rainfall ever recorded in the Carolinas
during that episode.

FEMA will have it's hands full. Ivan is stronger than expected and going into a populated area rather than a sparsly populated area and,
Ivan is expected to stall in already saturated areas producing record flooding and,
Jeanne may provide additional moisture and rainfall to the same area and,
Karl may be as big as Frances and Ivan by the time it reaches the US.
FEMA already had it's hands full with Charlie.

He said Sat and Sun Ivan is going to be parked over the tennessee and north carolina border. He also said Ivan can either cause Jeanne not to hit us or if Ivan weakened more over land and was more west it would cause Jeanne to track toward the Carolina's. So it sounds like the less rain we get from Ivan the higher the chance we get Jeanne lol
