Read below from the NWS discussion in New Orleans, LA

running late so will be brief. Main concern continues to be the
remnants of Ivan. A recon is enroute but delayed and should be
within the system early this evening. Satellite presentation has
been showing a flareup of convection primarily on the northern side
of the system within the gradient flow and a definite middle-level
swirl around 26.6n 88.9w with very little deep convection on the
south and west side. Hurricane center has advised that if situation
prompts an upgrade or designation...it would be named Ivan!
The gradient winds will be steadily increasing during the night with
tides being driven upwards about a half a foot higher than previous
high tide. Will be upgrading to coastal Flood Warning for Hancock
Colorado...St Bernard and lower Jefferson Parish. Will also extend watch
westward to Morgan City to blend with weather forecast office lch issuance. Forecast
will be driven by events in the Gulf for the next day or two. Will
gradient probability of precipitation tonight and Thursday from low in the north to
categorical in the coastal waters. Thereafter little changes from
previous forecast.

Wow I think that is a very bad call renaming it Ivan. This is a brand new circulation center, the actual circulation from Ivan is headed off towards Europe. Whatever forms won't be too strong but when people hear that "Ivan" is back they are going to freak out. This should be called Matthew by all means.

this isnt a brand new circulation center....it was intact from the time it split off to now.......the sat loops are rather compelling.
also...what about jeanne? the current llc called jeanne is definitely not the original jeanne....the original llc definitely split off and is no longer there.

You think maybe that is the point? That people will take this seriously?
That was exactly the point I was considering! This system is close to Nola and Houston - If it DOES form into something enough to be named - for God's sake - rename it IVAN - make people sit up and TAKE NOTICE.
I would bet that's their motivation in keeping it Ivan.

It should be given a new name...not only because of the fact most of "Ivan" was shot off to the NE over the open Atlantic east of Virginia....but ALSO (and maybe more importantly), because of the psychological impact on Gulf coast residents...especially those in hard hit areas such as Gulf Shores and Pensacola.
We'll witness enough depression, suicides, alcoholism, and other forms of post-traumatic stress as it is....without those grieving and distraught folks who've lost everything having to see and hear about "Ivan reincarnated in the GOM" again...
Just my .02 cents worth....as an amateur meteorologist and as someone who once experience the stress of his home being torn apart by a nighttime tornado
