4:30 PM Jeanne update....intensifying and Florida bound!

#1 Postby SouthernWx » Fri Sep 24, 2004 3:42 pm

Jeanne is moving faster toward the west this afternoon, and reconnisance aircraft indicates the hurricane has began deepening as it moves over warmer waters and underneath a high pressure ridge to the north.

I expect Jeanne to become a major hurricane before reaching Great Abaco Island, and maintain category 3 status at Florida landfall....which I'm currently projecting in the Jupiter to Stuart area. Please bear in mind Jeanne has a large eye, and thus hurricane conditions will likely be felt from Palm Beach county northward to the Melbourne area.

Also, while I'm currently forecasting 110 kts (125 mph) at time of Florida landfall....if the dry air is mixed out more quickly than I anticipate, rapid deepening is possible before landfall, and Jeanne could be even more intense than my forecast. A landfalling category 4 hurricane isn't out of the question (115-125 kts/ 135-145 mph).

Currently:
