Transfomers blowing out...

#1 Postby gtsmith » Sat Sep 25, 2004 7:11 pm

I'm in West Palm by the Villages and I just noticed a number of green flashes followed by booms (looking to the north and east). I think transformers are blowing out all over the area. Just wanted to post this before I lose power...

Good luck to all in my area...

Good luck to you and all in the path of Hurricane Jeanne tonight ...

My half-sister is in the West Palm Beach area and I've kept a close contact with her all day today, and updated her on what to expect ...

Ivan did the same in the Pensacola/Pace area. There are still about 35% of the customers without power in this area. We did not stay but those who did said they saw the same blue green flashes that lit up the sky

I remember transformers blowing out one by one when I was in Hurricane Alicia in Houston (Cat 3). It's a dramatic sight you never forget!

First time for my wife and her parents to see them...quite impressive.

Winds are really kicking now...gusts are very impressive. Just dicovered two new leaks in my father-in-law's house....

Amazingly, power still on and DirectTV still coming in....

Transformer explosions are really beautiful. The ones I'm seeing blowing up down here in Broward are more blueish-purple, though.

Pensacola's WEAR has a 'city cam' on top of the tall hotel building in downtown Pensacola. They were showing footage of several transformers blowing out, sparks arcing around, and then the streetlights in a huge chunk of the city would go black.

Very eerie stuff.

I also have a sister in WPB, SF. Hopefully she'll come through alright, and yours.

Yes you are 100% correct. We were standing on my breezeway tonight watching transformer after transformer blow out.

First you can see a blue/green flash...a beautiful color against the sky I might add...just beautiful.

Then...a few seconds later...there is a BZZZT BZZZT sound from the power arc.

I wonder why they don't just shut the whole darn grid down until the storm passes.
