Power Out Tip

#1 Postby Maestro » Sun Sep 26, 2004 9:37 am

This may seem trivial, but every bit helps! When Frances came through, we had charged our laptop computer so we could watch some DVD's when the power went out to pass them time (little did we know it would be 5 days without power!)...

Anyways, the DVD drive tears through battery power. This time, we ripped movies (that we own) on to the laptops hard drive. Watching the videos from the HD uses WAY less power and you get 2-3x battery life.

Like I said, I know this is trivial, but after the storm blows by, and the power goes out, it can get MIGHTY dull.

Be safe,

I've got 5 gallon jugs in my freezer for Jeanne, only had 3 for Frances but they lasted the 2 days power was out.

FWIW, a large APC battery backup system will charge a laptop for a very long time. My battery backup runs my computer (while it is in lower power mode, read AMD Cool'N'Quiet) for 3 hours. It will charge a laptop for almost a day.

Power inverters, connected to a marine battery, work really good. Ran the PC, the TV, small fans, etc... Anything under 75 watts works really well with very little draw on the battery. Then, when daylight comes and the conditions subside, you can get to the more serious business of generators!!
