South Palm Beach Report

#1 Postby StrongWind » Mon Sep 27, 2004 1:11 am

Visited my mother and sister in Lake Worth and took ice and other supplies along w/ grill to cook. I also took the opportunity to drive around a bit.

Dividing line is Hypoluxo Blvd. North is mostly black except Atlantis (rich folks.) South of there most power seems on but parts of Delray seem darkish. Boynton Beach Mall area - Congress between Gateway and Boynton Blvd is all lit up. Most stores were closed tonight except a few restaraunts but I expect most everything should open tomorrow. Boca Raton looks fine down the I-95 corridor. New damage seems minimal.

Lake Worth is 99% without power. The few places I saw with lights probably had alternate sources or special feeds - Palm Beach Community College, Lake Worth Nursing Home and JFK Hospital. Of course the utility grounds were bathed in light as well.

Family's experience says Jeanne was scarier (more wind & noise) than Frances but the only damage seems to be an exacerbation of existing damage. Close to 50% of houses in LW have at least minor (at least 1 tile) damage. Both my mother and sister have several immediate neighbors with catastrophic roof damage. In one case causing the interior cieling to collapse.

Given that FPL says that 77% of Palm Beach County is w/o power, I'd wager that 95% of PBC above Hypoluxo is dark.

There is a curfew for all PBC from 10PM to 6AM with 8-6 on the barrier islands. It was advised that folks attending the Dolphins game would need to retain their ticket stubs in order to gain admission back into the county that night.

As an aside, my cable/internet just came on so I can now get my S2K fix. :D

I have family living around Forest Hill Blvd. in WPB a couple of miles north of Lake Worth, I spoke to them last night. After Frances it took them 12 days to get power, after Jeanne 15 hours.

Just luck of the draw I guess.

This is a very odd recovery..
Everyone is in a downright rush to get back to "normal" so the damage and the intensity of this storm is completely masked by the previous ones!
I'm glad to hear of so many getting power back so quickly, and the damage not multiplied.

What else is amazing is Jupiter got most of their power back already, and we got the worst winds in the county. However, I dont think it will be as easy for Fort Pierce and Vero and Pt St Lucie to recover, as they sustained the worst damage.

I feel bad for Port St. Lucie, the kids had already been without school for three weeks before this storm hit. Their parents must be going nuts. The school bus drivers are all applying for unemployment benefits because they don't know when they'll see a paycheck again.

Checking in from Loxahatchee (The Acreage) West Palm Beach.

This storm was very strange to me. The winds were WAY worse than Frances and much scarier to me. But, when I walked outside the next morning, the pile of tree limbs and branches that we had gathered from the previous storm was still there, unmoved.

Our power was out at 6:45pm Saturday nite, back on again at 11:45 am Sunday morning. Lucky we are.

Flooding for sure but no damage, other than Jeanne helping the branches that Frances snapped, fall to the ground.

Again, this forum was so helpful. Thanks everyone for your forecasts.

Hey Scorpion:

I work for the Town of Jupiter. We just got power back to Town Hall a couple of minutes ago (was running on generator). I live out in Jupiter Farms. We have some severre flooding out there. I'd say 70% of my property is under water but at least my house is high and dry. I don't think anyone has power out there yet.
