That is rediculous to base sustained winds off gusts... if you want to do that look at all the gusts that were measured around south florida in andrew before EVERY piece of weather equipment was blown away!
Even in north dade where i live, opa-locka airport recieved gusts over 200+ one above 215+. If equipment had survived you would have seen some amazing wind gusts considering all the equipment was gone BEFORE the western eyewall even made landfall. Imagine the Eastern eye wall, which was guaranteed to be more intense on two basis'.
1. The eastern always is due to physics.
2. Plane measurements show andrew was strengthening as his eye was moving ashore!
There is no comparison... and wind gusts should not be used by any means as a method of re-clasifying a storm.
