Excellent post also. Now I wonder if it can form into anything?

I'd personally say that this storm doesn't really constitute a Sub tropical storm myself. Just having a bit of light to moderate convection wrapping around the top isn't that impressive really. We had a storm in the UK a month ago with some really nice wrapping around the centre. Hurricane force winds sustained at the centre. It kinda reminds me of this storm in all honesty, and there is no one who would agree that that was tropical or even subtropical. Convection in association with a baroclinically driven low doesn't automatically make it a ST storm. You do have a point with some of those storms you mention, but I'd personally say it's more a case of those storms didn't really need to be named either. I think Nicole was more impressive than this too...

The system should be upgraded today if current trends continue. The system looks quite subtropical, with convection bursts near the center, small/tight LLC, and is over marginally warm SSTs. No one can tell me that a system that has convection build-up in the form of thundercells on top of a tight LLC, is an extratropical cyclone. I'm quite sure it is a subtropical cyclone at this time and I suspect this will be made true in post-analysis.
Adding to your list, I can mention 2001's Josephine. And wow, was that storm never deserving of a name! The majority of its lifetime was spent with the LLC exposed and minimal shower activity surrounding it. Only one "menacing" burst of sprinkles made them upgrade.
And to the poster who said that Nicole looked better than this, here's a satellite image of Nicole when it had a similar strength to the current gale...998mb.

LOL...I guess you were right...Right after I posted above the TWO said this...
THE AREA OF LOW PRESSURE LOCATED ABOUT 850 MILES EAST OF BERMUDA
CONTINUES TO SLOWLY ACQUIRE TROPICAL CHARACTERISTICS...HOWEVER...
THUNDERSTORM ACTIVITY NEAR THE CENTER OF CIRCULATION REMAINS
LIMITED AT THIS TIME.
LOL

This one can really only be compared to Ana.
Even the grace designation isnt warranted because this is still an extra-tropical storm while Grace was merely more subtropical than tropical
I agree with the Earl part. Hmmm. I wonder if this will become anything..
