Will it be above average snowfall for philly? Are any storms expected in january? Is the NAO supposed to go negative (in the future)?

The NAO may go negative in the future, but not for the next 10-14 days. The ECMWF did hint at such a feature as well as a possible 50/50 low developing. A 50/50 low and -NAO would help bring a SECS/MECS to our region. I would not expect any snow in Philly for the next week at least, besides a few flurries.

Jrodd321,

I detailed my views concerning snowfall for the Mid-Atlantic/Northeast for February (including Philadelphia) at: http://www.storm2k.org/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=55706

It looks right now that along the I-95 corridor from Philly south, January may be a snow bust (when the cold is here, the moisture is not). However, because the air tends to really chill out by February. HISTORICALLY many of the big dumps in DC have tended to hit in February (GW birthday 1979, Lincoln's birthday 1983, etc to the totally snow-covered February 2003 where the snow didn't melt until March 10 or so in the suburbs).

The shifts in the patterns (plus the cooler air) MAY give the snow-lovers some of what they want next month (and even into March!). However, my mock prediction (an attempt to have a guaranteed success) of at least an inch of snow by the end of February might actually have jinked this year for them.

Or was it the resurfacing this year of the driveway from asphalt (slippery even in rain) to concrete?
