mountains when Dennis strikes??

#1 Postby wxwatcher91 » Fri Jul 08, 2005 8:45 am

ignoring the advertisement on the map, you can see where the central mountains of Cuba are..

then take a look at the current satellite
http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/PS/TROP/DATA/RT ... -loop.html

Dennis may run into those mountains and weaken considerably

Looks like he's gonna miss them. NHC keeps it considerably stronger after Cuba now.

Those aren't "mountains", at least not like the mountains in Eastern Cuba or the real mountiains on Hispaniola. Don't expect those to disrupt the hurricane very much if at all.

The real big mountains are in the eastern part of the island called LA SIERRA MAESTRA where some of the peaks are around 6,000 feet.

Im not seeing the mountains you guys are talking about. Heres a terrain map of Cuba with an MSpainted path that will be pretty close to the actual track. Should split the mountains (hills).

From looking at the latest loops, it appears the strongest NE quadrant winds will in fact hit that hilly area. May not be mountains, but I look for it to weaken much more than if it were hitting Cuba, say, 40 miles to the west.

Glad I'm not in the town of Cienfuegos, by the way.

Cienfuegos, Cuba is a pretty major city. It gonna slice right though the center of the island. This is a worst case for Cuba.

Cienfuegos is in for one heck of a ride. Sadly, I doubt there will be much left.
