TWC at it Again

#1 Postby Derek Ortt » Sun Jul 17, 2005 6:08 am

Just said Texas is out of the woods...

never knew a 3 day forecast had a margin of error of less than 100NM and that a hurricane is merely a single point

Good God almighty. I guess I'm stupid for even being surprised in the slightest bit.

Glad you posted...I just heard Mike Siddel Say that, and I was shocked!!

"You folks in Brownsville, South Texas, looks like you're out of the woods" Sheesh.

I have also noticed there is much much less airtime for Emily than for Dennis. Is this because landfall in Mexico is just not that important? I guess so.

the board activity also is not anywhere near the same for Texas landfalls as it is for Florida and nwhhc receives far less traffic for a TX hit than for a hit anywhere els in the USA

I get the feeling that Texans dont take these things as seriously as they should. After all, during Claudette, they waited UNTIL the eye wall was destroying structures to start boarding up and evacuating

That is shocking. Brownsville is very much in the forecast cone. Glad he wasn't on for Hurricane Charley re: Punta Gorda when aimed for Tampa, and that was less than 24 hrs. out!

TWC is the McWeather of the meteorological world.

For fun...landfall comparison stats by state: http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/paststate.shtml

It's easy to see why it might appear that Floridians get a little more anxious about approaching canes than Texans do.

Dr. Lyons didn't say that in his tropical update, and frankly he's only one I take seriously anymore on TWC discussing the tropics.

I'd like to know how a topic about TWC comments turns into a topic about Texans not taking canes as seriously as Floridians? Give me a break!!!

I don't think that's the case, but I do know there haven't been NEARLY as many topics on this board. During Dennis it was insane with pages every few minutes, it's not even half that this time.

Or maybe there just aren't as many people from Texas on this board as there are people from Florida.

In any event, I'm sure many people from Brownsville (who aren't watching TWC) are taking this thing seriously. I know I would.

At 3 days out? Also moidel consensus wasn't nearly this tight at 3 days out with Dennis.

Texas is taking this potential threat VERY serious.

I can tell you that state government and emergency operations officials have been "on alert" since Friday and that alert status is ramping up even further today.

Hey now, I merely said it might appear that way. Doesn't mean it's true :)

Not all the posters answered this poll so it cannot be taken as representative of all the S2K members, but it might be indicative of the placement of the more active posters:

http://www.storm2k.org/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=66231

When you combine the Florida answers, they outnumber the Texas places by about 2:1--again that's only for people who bothered to answer. So it's not surprising that board activity would be higher during a Florida threat.

However, there's way too many unknowns about the board membership to look solely at board activity and conclude that Texans don't give a flip :) But then again, Floridians have been hit more often than Texans...so, I don't know, just some food for thought.

Even if Emily goes in South of Texas wouldn't that make Texas in the feared right front quadrant? After seeing that huge blob she threw off on Jamaica I would be worried if landfall was anywhere North of Veracruz.

Yes... the wind field is quite small though, BUT South Texas is still in the cone of error for a direct hit, so it's irresponsible to say they are out of the woods. Even if it comes in 100 miles south of Brownsville there would still be squally weather and the chance of tornadoes there, hardly "out of the woods"

I was wondering the same thing. I would think they would have some damage from this. I sure wouldn't want to be in there shoes right now.

if it was a straight shot with no land in the way, Id side with tWC< but the Yucatan, or ay land interaction, can easily skew the storms path more towards any part of Texas. Simply put it is a joke to say they know where it will landfall at this point.
