Are people riding it out on Cozumel?

This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

There are always those who refuse to leave. Most of the tourists are getting out according to the media reports:

luckily it looks like the northern eyewall may pass about 20-30 miles south...they will still get hurricane force winds of course, but probably cat1-2 winds instead of the small area of cat 3-4 in the eyewall...this is barring any northern bobbles.

Uh, no. Maybe you're thinking of Cancun?

Cozumel is looking like the bullseye right now.

Agreed. I hope the people in Cozumel are well hunkered down for this hurricane in sturdy concrete hotels miles from the beach.

I sure hope this thing continues weakening. Cozumel will be leveled if it hits as a 4. I just visited there a month ago.

I think most island residents stay. They have concrete homes and they know where to go inland for more security. I am sure these islands have some good places for them to go to to hunker down.

So Cozumel is 24 miles wide across? I would have never guessed.

They are 10-12 miles from the beach that is going to see the surge...

Sorry if I caused a debate, but I guess I was a little exaggerating (after all, who would want to build a hotel 10 miles away from shore?). What I meant was I hope that the people are hunkered down in a concrete building safe from storm surge, which theoritically could mean a building 10-12 mi away from shore.

A note from my buddy mike s, who is stationed in Cozumel on business for the summer said earlier this afternoon that the port and airport were already closed and there was no way off the island now.

I'm praying he and his wife stay safe.

i agree, now. when i posted and extrapolating the previous few hours it looked as if the eyewall would just miss south...now that looks more unlikely.....hopefully she doesnt go through any rapid restrengthening.

I can only imagine the waiting around at the airport trying to get a flight out of there. I would just find a sturdy hotel inland away from the coast and try to ride it out. Ironically the "sturdiest" hotels are probably right on the coast.
