It is just awful... terrible... and sweltering here. Tomorrow and Monday expected to be warmer. Worst heat wave in 5 years according to the NWS. They finally put out this:

URGENT - WEATHER MESSAGE
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE BIRMINGHAM AL
1105 AM CDT SAT JUL 23 2005

...HEAT ADVISORY IN EFFECT FOR ALL CENTRAL ALABAMA COUNTIES
THROUGH SUNDAY...

.THE HEAT INDEX IS A MEASURE OF HOW HOT IT FEELS WHEN THE EFFECTS OF
HUMIDITY ARE COMBINED WITH THE TEMPERATURE. A HEAT INDEX OF 105
DEGREES IS CONSIDERED THE LEVEL WHERE MANY PEOPLE BEGIN TO EXPERIENCE
EXTREME DISCOMFORT OR PHYSICAL STRESS. THESE AILMENTS ARE ONLY
COMPOUNDED WHEN SIMILAR CONDITIONS ARE MET OVER CONSECUTIVE DAYS. THE
HEAT INDEX IS MEASURED UNDER SHADY CONDITIONS...AND DIRECT EXPOSURE
TO SUNLIGHT CAN INCREASE THE HEAT INDEX AS MUCH AS 15 DEGREES.

...HEAT ADVISORY IN EFFECT UNTIL 7 PM CDT SUNDAY...

A HEAT ADVISORY IS IN EFFECT FOR ALL OF CENTRAL ALABAMA THROUGH
SUNDAY. COMBINED HIGH MOISTURE CONTENT AND TEMPERATURES IN THE MID TO
UPPER 90S...WILL MAKE IT FEEL LIKE IT IS AROUND 110 DEGREES TODAY
AND SUNDAY. URBAN AND MORE DENSELY POPULATED AREAS WILL LIKELY BE A
FEW DEGREES WARMER THAN THE SURROUNDING COUNTRYSIDE...AND RETAIN HEAT
LONGER INTO THE EVENING HOURS.

IF YOU MUST VENTURE OUT DURING THE HEAT OF THE DAY...REMEMBER TO
WEAR LOOSE...LIGHT COLORED CLOTHING. DRINK PLENTY OF WATER...AND
TAKE FREQUENT BREAKS IN A SHADED...WELL VENTILATED AREA. CHILDREN...
THE ELDERLY...AND THOSE WITH CHRONIC AILMENTS...ARE ESPECIALLY
VULNERABLE TO THE HEAT. FRIENDS...NEIGHBORS...AND RELATIVES SHOULD
CHECK ON THOSE AT RISK...AND REMIND THEM OF HOT WEATHER SAFETY
TIPS. ALSO...BE SURE TO PROVIDE YOUR OUTDOOR PETS WITH FRESH WATER
AND CHANGE IT FREQUENTLY.

We have a heat advisory here until tomorrow night. It's just plain nasty outside. My dog does not like to be outside. She rebels by lying in the grass when I take her out to potty.

Upper 90s for the third straight day, and not a drop of rain. I think heat advisories are going to go out for my area Sun, Mon, and Tues, as temps will be in the upper 90s and the lows may not get below 80 degrees.

I am sick of this heat. Bring on fall!

I can sympathize Kristi I am taking care of 6 dogs this weekend and they all looked at me like I was nuts so I have decided they are all just going to have to pretend daylight hours are now night time. They are just in and I will just have to walk everyone at 3 am when at least it is tolerable.

I am really surprised I have not heard about a lot of deaths because of this long long stretch of heat. It scares me to think of people without AC.

Sorry, no sympathies from here as we've been going through this since mid June-except with ACTUAL temperatures of 110-120F and recently with the dewpoints going up (75F dews in TUS/PHX/YUM this morning) the HI's have been on the high side (117-119F the past three days in YUM). The difference between humid heat and "dry" heat is that the former boils you and the latter microwaves you which means you die faster in dry heat.

Yeah... the media reports sound like it's been pretty deadly out there. We at least have had these afternoon storms(except today) to cool certain people off.

It's just downright hot in many parts of the country. I noticed that Grand Junction CO hit its all time high two days ago. I have relatives, including my grandma, who live there.

We're actually over our average July rainfall here in Houston. Thank God. After last month.

Chicago has their cooling shelters open... you would be amazed just how many people do not have or cannot afford AC. There is financial assistance for these type of situations, but in Chicago trying to get the help is very SOOO difficult compared to other parts of the country.

Personally I know a couple of neighbors that don't have AC and and are elderly. I invited them to come over to my house if they need to cool off. I know they won't go to the shelters but hoping they will take me up on the offer. We may not know each other well.. but there's times you have to put that aside.

If anyone knows of someone close by without AC please extend the offer too. I know it's hard sometimes to invite those we don't know well over.. but you never know it could be the start to a new friendship on top of being a very kind thing to do!

IF YOU DO NOT HAVE ACCESS TO AIR CONDITIONING ON SUNDAY...TRY TO SEEK
ACCESS TO YOUR COMMUNITY'S COOLING SHELTERS OR ANY OTHER AIR
CONDITIONED BUILDING. IN CHICAGO...CALL 3 1 1 FOR THE LOCATION OF
THE NEAREST COOLING SHELTER.
