Question about historical storm tracks?

#1 Postby micktooth » Sun Jul 24, 2005 5:51 pm

I enjoy looking at old storm tracks especially from wunderground and the like. But I was wondering, how in the earth do we know the exact track of the storms? There were no satellites and there couldn't be ship reports for every storm. Some storms formed way out in the Atlantic and their tracks are very interesting. So how do we really know that these are close to the exact tracks that these older storms took?

unless we
1.-build a time machine

2.-go back to the year 1933

3.-set up that new satillite that we've been working on

4.-put it into orbit

5.- leave some people behind to operate the equipment (or go to v. 2)

6.-and gather the info

v.2 from 5.

5.- go back to the future

6.- go up into space and retreive the info

ya that will definitly work

Well you wouldn't get an exact track, but I doubt there were many unreported storms. I mean the volume of trade between the Americas and Europe was enormous. You have ships in the Caribbean, ships coming from South America, ships from American ports. *shrugs* I'm not an expert so who knows?

Ever been in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean Kevin? I have and it is desolate. Not a ship in sight. I made the crossing on an aircraft carrier in the early 90's. No, not many ships other than the ones attached to the task force. I imagine back in the 20's and 30's there were even less ships......MGC

"NFI"....Actually..........The amount of ships traversing the globe were at a MUCH higher count than there is now. This was the ONLY way to get imports/exports from/to the US.

We definately will never know how many storms formed back in the early days, or even the exact tracks they followed, especially when they were far out at sea.

So then what's the deal on wunderground and the other historical sites? Is it just bunk? How about we create our own Storm 2K historical archives! We can make up our own tracks and then say that there sure were some bad a** storms back then :D

Don't get the wrong idea. It's not just some made up archives, or a guessing-game by any means. We have a rough idea of the areas traversed by the storms, and their general intensity at the time. Granted, strange tracks like loops in the middle of the ocean would often be missed, but otherwise there are only so many paths from point A to point B.
